| Dave Coverly at Disney's Hometown Toonfest |
[Jun. 26th, 2008|07:25 pm] |

The GLC's Dave Coverly is among the cartoonists who will be attending Walt Disney's Hometown Toonfest, September 19-20 in Marceline, MO., 120 miles northeast of Kansas City. The event is a public celebration of cartooning in Disney's boyhood hometown (1906-11). Toonfest started locally in 1998 and has grown into a national attraction for professional cartoonists from all media and their fans.
Four of America's most popular syndicated cartoonists will attend. Headliners are Jan Eliot, creator of "Stone Soup"; Dave Coverly, "Speed Bump"; Greg Evans, "Luann"; and Jerry Scott, co-creator of "Baby Blues" (with Rick Kirkman) and "Zits" (with the GLC's Jim Borgman). The four cartoonist superstars will show and talk about their work while addressing statewide high school and college students on Friday and the general public on Saturday in free programs at Marceline's Uptown Theater. The cartoonists will be Grand Marshals in the annual Toonfest parade up (and down) Marceline's Main Street USA on Saturday morning. Key Toonfest sponsor is Andrews McMeel Universal, Kansas City-based media company providing the world with newspaper features, books, calendars, film/tv amd online wireless content. Visit http://www.andrewsmcmeel.com
For Toonfest information, including all events, schedules, how to get there and where to stay, and how professional cartoonists may exhibit their work at the Toonfest International Cartoon Exhibition, contact a Toonfest Ambassador at toonfest@sbcglobal.net , 660-376-9258, or Walt Disney's Hometown Toonfest, 207 N. Main Street USA, Marceline, MO 64658. Visit http://www.toonfest.net
Toonfest attractions and events in Marceline Saturday include the Walt Disney Museum (former Santa Fe Railroad Depot in Disney's day) featuring rare Disney family photos and memorabilia; live entertainment, The Prncess Tea Party (for girls 3-8), crafts and food booths in Ripley Park; and open competitions ranging from pie eating to bait casting.
Walt Disney credited Marceline, a small town and railroad stop in a pastoral setting, as inspiration for his lifework as a cartoon animator and creator of magical kingdoms. He returned to Marceline over the course of his career for research for his cartoons and theme parks, hometown acknowledgement of his accomplishments, and rest and relaxation. |
